The moon is so beautiful tonight. It almost looks like a cartoon drawing.
Stuck in traffic, I let my mind wander. I remembered the moon in Tony’s favorite book. I remembered rocking my baby boy, as I read Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, to him almost every night.
“What should we read tonight, Tony?” And more often than not, he’d pull Goodnight Moon off the shelf and climb into my lap. Whenever I’d reach the part about goodnight to this and goodnight to that, he’d call out every object right along with me. Too young to read, he had the book memorized!
“Good night room
Good night cow
Good night light and the red balloon
Good night kittens and good night mittens
Good night clocks and goodnight socks
Good night little house and goodnight mouse
Goodnight comb and goodnight brush…
Goodnight stars
Goodnight air…”
And when the reading was done, it was just rocking time. I’d hum and sing this made up tune: Goodnight, goodnight…
Goodnight, my Tony
Sleep tight, sleep tight
Sleep tight, my Tony
I love you, I love you
I love you, my Tony
Goodnight
Beautiful.
my dear mom would read this book to me during my childhood. she is gone now, but just seeing the cover on your blog made me feel her presence. I hope you feel your baby tonight too.
So sweet…hold your mama near to your heart always…never forgotten.
